Off the Mat: Asana

To celebrate my successful completion of the 200 hour yoga teacher training program it seemed fitting to discuss asanas!

When most people think of yoga the physical practice comes to mind. Asana is sanskrit for "seat", traditionally referring to a seated posture used for meditation. Asanas, or the physical postures of yoga, allow us to not only improve our physical well-being, but learn to connect with our inner-selves.

Imagine what you can conquer off the mat after you manage that posture you never thought you could or would. Imagine that posture that helps you learn where in your body you hold tension and how to relax that specific body part. Imagine a sequence of postures that challenges you, but allows your mind to stay in the present moment, achieving meditation.

So many choices for posture types... yin yoga, restorative, hatha, vinyasa, ashtanga, kundalini... and many more, all with different benefits. I found this article especially helpful when starting out... https://yogarove.com/different-types-of-yoga-and-their-benefits/

Or if you're more visually inclined, though it is not all inclusive...

Do a bit of research, try out a few different ones. Variety in practice is also fun and beneficial! If you feel overwhelmed, or do not know where to start with your physical practice, feel free to jump over to my contact page and send me an email. I'd love to chat and help you get started or even switch things up. Namaste!
